Explain the art of calligraphy in no more than 80 words.

In a nutshell, ‘calligraphy’ is defined as the art of beautiful writing, which is thought to have been derived from the Greek words for beauty (kallos) and to write (graphein) and the art itself dates back centuries. One of the most prominent characteristics of calligraphy scripts are the contrasting strokes of thick and thin which are my favourite.

Tell us more about the concept and ideation behind these IWD-themed wallpapers

I draw inspiration from the purple themed colour of IWD, as well as the 2021 IWD campaign theme #ChooseToChallenge. Women today are still challenged by inequalities. It is up to each of us to challenge and call out gender bias and equality. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world. This is represented in these five designs through different shades of purple either individually or together to form a cohesive gradient. Each design evokes a different vibe, reflecting each of us is equal and can be who we want. The stronger pieces have a bolder looking handwritten script, while more gentle pieces utilise flowy, modern calligraphy script.

What is your advise to people new to the art of calligraphy?

Anyone can delve into this artform and contrary to popular belief, beautiful handwriting is not a prerequisite and one only needs mindfulness, patience and good guidance.

Founder of Owl & Quill Calligraphy, a design studio specialises in elegant, quality penmanship, bespoke paper goods and services. Pui Yee is a self-taught artist & expert in brush lettering and pointed pen calligraphy, who has worked with well-known brands include Tiffany & Co, Jo Malone London and Tory Burch. In pursuit of her dream, she continues to study timeless traditional scripts and hone her skills by attending classes conducted by world-renowned calligraphers to elevate her business. Over the years, Pui Yee and her work has been featured in various print and online publications such as The Wedding Scoop, Nuffnang, Malay Mail and Sin Chew Daily.
